5th semester project

Puppet theater

The main module of this project, Narrativity and Interaction, during the fifth semester, the project work focuses on the creation of interactive, narrative universes and scenic artifacts.

The semester theme for this project was puppets, objects, and intermedial performance. The module introduces the production and creation of narrative craftsmanship and narrative universes, with particular emphasis on the integration of interactive storytelling.

Furthermore, the project established a collaborative processes and projects with external partners, which we have achieved in partnership with Kulturhuset Trekanten.

The performance “Luscinia Luscinia, A Night’s Mad Tales” is a reinterpretation of H.C. Andersen’s “The Nightingale”, created by Aalborg University’s 5th semester Art and Technology students in collaboration with Kulturhuset Trekanten. The plot intertwines the classic nightingale tale with examples of technological advancements from the 1840s to today. The story unfolds across eight sections, each thematically inspired by “The Nightingale” and integrating these themes into the real-world context of technological progress.

Guided by a charismatic narrator, the audience was taken on a journey through whimsical, fictional scenes rooted in the essence of both “The Nightingale” and the distinct technologies of evolving eras. By exploring the relationship between these tech-inspired anecdotes and the original “The Nightingale”, the performance delves into the art of storytelling and the interplay between the artificial and the natural.

My role on the project as an Art Director

In theater an art director plays a crucial role in shaping the creative vision, artistic direction, and overall aesthetic of a theater company or production. Their responsibilities often bridge creative decision-making, leadership, and collaboration with artists and staff. Here’s a breakdown of what i did as an artistic director:

Chosen and approved the plays, performances, or productions for a theater season, often balancing classics, contemporary works, and experimental pieces.

Encouraged new interpretations of works or champions new voices, playwrights, and styles.

Supervised all productions to ensure they align with the theater’s artistic vision and standards.

I worked with playwrights on script revisions or development of new works.

I learned as the artistic director is being the heart and mind behind the artistic life of a theater, steering its creative endeavors while ensuring its relevance and connection to both its audience and the broader arts landscape.
